AWAY TRAVEL: WINTER WORKSHOP
A HOLIDAY STUDIO FOR PERSONALIZATION AND PLAY

For the holiday season, we transformed Away’s Williamsburg store into Winter Workshop—a festive, hands-on studio centered around customization, craft, and connection. Designed as both retail activation and seasonal escape, the experience invited guests to slow down, personalize their luggage, and step into a tactile winter world.
Holiday retail became hands-on, human, and deeply personal.
At the core was live customization. Visitors could swap in colored wheels and handles, commission hand-painted illustrations on hard cases, and embroider soft luggage on site. The store shifted from showroom to working atelier, making the act of personalization visible, social, and celebratory.
Moments of warmth were layered throughout the space. Guests sipped hot cocoa while filling out “Get Away With Me” postcards to send to a friend—transforming travel into a shared invitation. The environment balanced nostalgia with utility, encouraging visitors to design not just their suitcase, but the story around it.
A custom VR component extended the workshop into the digital realm. Guests could explore color combinations in an immersive environment, enter the queue for live personalization, and play a travel-themed matching game from their phones while they waited. Physical craft and interactive technology worked in tandem, reinforcing Away’s commitment to thoughtful, modern travel.
Winter Workshop reframed holiday shopping as something participatory rather than transactional—turning product into process, and retail into ritual.
Customization wasn’t an add-on—it was the experience.
